Strong infrastructure development stimulates economic growth, creates local jobs, supports a cleaner environment and contributes to the overall prosperity of Ontarians. That’s why the governments of Canada and Ontario are working in partnership with municipalities to improve and revitalize public infrastructure across the province.

On August 26, 2008, both levels of government signed the Building Canada Fund – Communities Component Agreement. Under this agreement, Canada and Ontario made an initial joint investment of $362 million towards smaller projects in municipalities with populations under 100,000.

In response to the economic downturn, the governments of Canada and Ontario have committed an unprecedented level of infrastructure stimulus spending through the 2009 federal and provincial budgets. This included a commitment to expand and accelerate funding under the Communities Component.
