Point Edward Celebrates Michigan Avenue Improvements
July 24, 2009
Village of Point Edward residents will be able to take advantage of safer sidewalks and driving surfaces this summer, now that work has been completed to upgrade one of the area’s busiest roads.
The improvements to Michigan Avenue should be noted as a flagship for Ontario infrastructure projects, as the first of 290 to finish construction under the first intake of the Building Canada Fund - Communities Component. The project also included the replacement of the watermain and storm sewer, which will improve water and waste management for the community.
Representatives from all three levels of government were delighted to celebrate its completion at a ceremony on July 24 and reopen the street for drivers and pedestrians.
“Michigan Avenue is an important roadway in the heart of our community, so it was important to ensure it was maintained,” said Mayor Kirkland, at the event. “We are thrilled about the results of this project, which will provide a sustainable road and water distribution system for our Village.”
Many more communities will soon join Point Edward to benefit from their own improved infrastructure thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of over $685 million under the first intake of the Communities Component. Throughout the province, these projects will benefit communities like Point Edward by creating jobs, stimulating local economies and improving quality of life.
